The Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama, from the 1940s with the "Vitória Expresso", to the 1970s with the "Equipe Dinamite", passing through the star-studded team of the 1980s and the surprising comeback in the 1990s, wrote an immortal chapter in the history of football.

Alongside its achievements, Vasco also stood out for its traditional jersey, consisting of a white shirt with black diagonal stripes, accompanied by black shorts and white socks, with the iconic cross on the chest. This look became a landmark, but what is the origin of this jersey? The BRG365 invites you to explore a bit of this history.

Origin of Vasco's Jersey

The inspiration for the Vasco jersey dates back to 1898, when the club was founded by a group of young Portuguese in honor of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, who opened the route to India. Initially, Vasco was a rowing club, and in competitions in Rio, its members wore a black shirt with a diagonal white stripe from the shoulder, featuring a red cross (Cross of Christ) in the center.

This idea was proposed by one of the founders, José Lopes de Freitas, symbolizing courage and faith. Since its adoption, the design has never been altered.
