The São Paulo shield is one of the most iconic symbols of Brazilian football. It is worth noting that, since the club's foundation in 1930, the São Paulo shield has undergone few significant changes. The main elements of the symbol have never altered, maintaining the essence of the tricolor coat of arms over the years. The BRG365 will take you to understand the origin and evolution of this emblematic symbol.

History and Origin of the São Paulo Shield

The birth of the São Paulo shield dates back to the year of the club's creation. The German designer Walter Ostrich (nicknamed “Oliver”) and one of the founders of São Paulo, Fímião Moraes Pinto Filho, were responsible for the design of the shield, which was officially adopted in the match on January 26, 1930. The design, featuring the tricolor flag, is unique in Brazilian football and has no similarity with other clubs, making it a source of inspiration for many others.

Origin of the "Five Points"

The elements of the São Paulo shield were officially defined in the club's bylaw in 2008, and the symbol was officially named "Five Points".

In 2008, the São Paulo bylaw revealed the components of the shield and its official name, "Five Points". The design of the shield consists of “an isosceles triangle, with the top being a rectangle. The height of the rectangle corresponds to half the length of the side of the triangle. The background is black, with the letters ‘SPFC’ in white, in 'Courier' typeface. Inside the triangle, there is a central white band, with a width equivalent to a quarter of the shorter side of the triangle, and on each side of the band, there are asymmetrical red and black triangles."

The Most Significant Change

Throughout its 93 years of history, the São Paulo tricolor shield has undergone few changes. The most significant change occurred in the 1980s when the dots between the letters "SPFC" were removed. The colors of the shield (red, white, and black) come from the founding clubs: Club Athletico Paulistano (red and white) and Associação Atlética das Palmeiras (black and white). The club's regulations also define that the colors represent the flag of the state of São Paulo.

The Stars of the São Paulo Shield

The São Paulo shield features five stars. Three of them are red and represent the world titles won by the club in 1992, 1993, and 2005, at the FIFA Club World Cup. These red stars symbolize the great success of São Paulo on the world stage.

Additionally, the shield has two yellow stars, honoring the athlete Adhemar Ferreira da Silva for the world records set at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 and at the 1955 Pan American Games, where he excelled in the triple jump. The yellow stars celebrate Adhemar's achievements, which were a significant contribution to São Paulo's sports legacy.

Meaning of the Colors of the São Paulo Shield

The three colors of São Paulo were defined on January 25, 1930, the date of the club's foundation, and were rigorously established. The colors red, white, and black remain unchanged. The red represents the members of CA Paulistano, the black represents the members of AA das Palmeiras, and the white is the point of union between the two clubs.

What Was the First São Paulo Shield?

The first symbol of São Paulo featured only the letter "P". Later, a red shield was created and used during the club's professionalization phase, when it was still known as "Palestra Itália". Eventually, the shield was transformed into a circular shape, and the red color was completely discarded.
