Rabada's Suspension Lifted Following SAIDS Protocol
Kagiso Rabada, 29, has been cleared to return to cricket after serving a one-month ban for testing positive for a recreational drug during South Africa's SA20 league in January.
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed on Monday that the fast bowler completed a substance abuse treatment program, fulfilling the requirements to reduce his suspension from three months to one.
The violation, classified as a "substance of abuse" under anti-doping rules, occurred during a January 21 match between MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants.
Rabada was notified of the adverse finding on April 1 and immediately left the Indian Premier League (IPL) to serve his provisional suspension in South Africa.
Gujarat Titans Confirm Immediate Availability
Gujarat Titans’ director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, announced Rabada’s return ahead of Tuesday’s IPL clash against Mumbai Indians: "He’s now available, having served the suspension. All protocols were followed, and we look forward to his contributions. "
Rabada, who took two wickets in his two IPL appearances this season before departing, rejoined the Titans’ training on Monday.
The bowler expressed remorse in a statement: "I deeply regret letting down my team and fans. Cricket is a privilege I’ll never take for granted".
Controversy Over Secrecy and WTC Final Eligibility
Rabada’s swift return drew criticism from former Australia captain Tim Paine, who called the process "opaque" and questioned why details of the ban were initially withheld.
"Taking drugs isn’t a personal issue—it’s a breach of contract," Paine argued. Despite this, SAIDS emphasized Rabada’s compliance, noting his participation in counseling sessions.
The pacer remains eligible for South Africa’s World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s (June 11–15), where he will lead the Proteas’ attack.
His return bolsters both the Gujarat Titans’ playoff hopes and South Africa’s quest for their maiden WTC title.
