CWI names unchanged core squad

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has retained 14 members from its recent ODI squads for the upcoming three-match series against England, starting May 29.

Shimron Hetmyer has been excluded due to his ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) stint.

The decision underscores the team’s focus on consistency after securing series victories over Bangladesh (3-0) and England (2-1) in late 2024.

Head coach Daren Sammy emphasized the significance of the West Indies vs England contests as part of the long-term roadmap toward the 2027 ICC World Cup.

“Building consistency is key, and these matches against top-tier sides like England will test our progress under pressure,” Sammy said.

The Windies currently sit ninth in ODI rankings and must climb to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 tournament.

The series against England will follow three ODIs in Ireland (May 21-25), offering critical match practice ahead of the Edgbaston opener on May 29.

Vice-captain Brandon King and veteran Evin Lewis are expected to lead the batting, while Amir Jangoo—hero of December’s debut century against Bangladesh—adds firepower to the middle order.

West Indies vs England: Key Player Updates

All-rounders Romario Shepherd and Roston Chase return to bolster the attack, alongside pace duo Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph, both fit after injury concerns.

Teenage wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew, recalled after strong domestic form, replaces Hetmyer.

“Jewel brings energy, and this West Indies vs England series is the perfect stage for him,” Sammy added.

The bowling department sees a tactical shift, with former Windies pacer Ravi Rampaul replacing James Franklin as bowling coach.

Rampaul’s expertise will be vital against England’s power-packed lineup.

Series Schedule

  • 1st ODI: Edgbaston, Birmingham – May 29

  • 2nd ODI: The Oval, London – June 1

  • 3rd ODI: Lord’s, London – June 3

With the West Indies vs England rivalry historically balanced (43-44 win-loss record in ODIs), the series promises high stakes.

A strong showing could propel the Windies closer to World Cup qualification, while England, under new white-ball captain Harry Brook, seeks redemption after their 2024 defeat.
