Arsenal has completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, with the deal potentially reaching up to £31.6 million. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Gunners, which includes an option for an additional year. The transfer fee consists of an initial payment of £27.4 million, with an additional £4.2 million in performance-related bonuses.
Arteta's Excitement
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the new signing, stating: "Mikel is a player who will bring great quality with his experience and versatility." Merino's arrival marks Arsenal's third major signing in this transfer window. The club has also secured Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, the latter acquired on a permanent basis from Brentford following a successful loan spell.
Rising Performance
Merino's recent success with Spain further heightens expectations surrounding his move to the Premier League. The midfielder played a key role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, participating in all seven matches and scoring a crucial goal in extra time against Germany in the quarter-finals. Additionally, his performances throughout the tournament were instrumental in securing the championship for Spain, highlighting his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
Arteta, therefore, praised Merino's technical skills and strong character, emphasizing how he will strengthen the squad: "Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, as well as his strong and positive character and personality. As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euro helping Spain to win the tournament."

Known for his versatility in midfield roles, Merino is expected to complement Declan Rice. Rice played a box-to-box role on several occasions last season. Furthermore, Merino's arrival provides Arteta with additional options in midfield. He will compete with existing players such as Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard.
On the other hand, the Spaniard is no stranger to the Premier League. He spent a year at Newcastle United before moving to Real Sociedad in 2018. During his time at Sociedad, he played alongside Odegaard when the Norwegian was on loan from Real Madrid. Last season, Merino made 45 appearances for Real Sociedad across all competitions. He scored eight goals and showcased his significant contributions on the field.
With Merino's experience and proven track record, Arsenal fans can therefore expect an exciting chapter ahead. The team continues to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season.
