Football has this magic of always bringing surprises, and that’s exactly what happened this Friday (11). Peru, the last place team in the Qualifiers, defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the ninth round, playing in Lima. The only goal of the match was scored by Miguel Araujo in the 43rd minute of the second half at the National Stadium.
With this result, the team led by Jorge Fossati, already known by international fans, accumulated 6 points. Thus, Peru climbed to the ninth position in the standings, pushing Chile to the bottom. This was Peru's first victory in the Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, keeping alive the hope of competing in the next World Cup.
First half without excitement
It was a match without clear chances. Uruguay had more ball possession and dominated the actions, especially with Arrascaeta leading the team. However, the visitors did not pose much danger to goalkeeper Gallese. Peru, in turn, showed little creativity in their offensive organization, which explains why they are still at the bottom of the table.
Peru secures victory in the final stage
After the break, Peru came out strong in the game and managed to score a goal as a reward. In the final minutes, at the 43rd minute, defender Michel Araujo took advantage of a cross from the left and beat Rochet, securing the team's first victory in the Qualifiers.
Upcoming matches for the teams
Peru will face Brazil on Tuesday (15) in Brasília. Meanwhile, Uruguay will play at home against Ecuador on the same day.
