His father, Virgilijus Alekna, had thrown 69.89 meters in Athens 20 years ago. Shortly after, Jamaica's Rojé Ston broke the record with a throw of 70 meters, securing the gold medal in a stunning turnaround.

After Katie Moon failed to clear 4.95 meters twice, Australia's Nina Kennedy emerged victorious.

Basketball
To reach the semifinals, the U.S. women's basketball team easily defeated Nigeria with a score of 88-74. Two-time MVP A'ja Wilson had a fantastic night, scoring 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and blocking two shots.
Volleyball
After five thrilling matches filled with intense action, the Polish men's volleyball team advanced to the finals of the Games for the first time since 1976, defeating the U.S. in the process. Poland will face the winner of the semifinal between France and Italy.
Sailing
After winning gold in the women's dinghy class on Wednesday, Marit Bouwmeester from the Netherlands became the most successful woman in Olympic sailing. Australia's Matt Wearn held onto his gold in the men's sailing event. The weather forced the first abandonment of the men's dinghy race halfway through.
Weightlifting
China's Li Fabin set a new Olympic record and triumphantly defended his title in the 61kg category.
Skateboarding
Australia's Keegan Palmer won the men's park skateboarding championship with ease. When he competed in his final run as the last skateboarder, he had already secured the gold medal.

The U.S. team was thrilled with its achievement, temporarily placing itself in gold position with a score of 271.3166. However, China captured gold after the U.S. with a more complex routine. The U.S. took silver and Spain finished in third place.
