Botafogo is one of the oldest football institutions in Brazil, being nicknamed "Glorious" since its foundation. This team is one of the most well-known in South America, and its influence peaked after winning the Copa Libertadores da América in 2024. Want to know why Botafogo is nicknamed "Glorious"? BRG365 will tell you.

The Origin of "Glorious"
Botafogo earned the nickname "Glorious" early in its history. Founded in 1904, the Rio de Janeiro club officially debuted in the Campeonato Carioca in 1906, after having played some friendly matches.
In 1907, Botafogo won the title of the first Campeonato Carioca, sharing the trophy with Fluminense until 1990. This episode was curious because the regulation at the time provided for a tiebreaker match, but the Tricolor refused to play. The title remained undefined until the early 1990s when the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro recognized Botafogo as the official champion of that edition.
The Creation of Botafogo's Nickname

In 1908 and 1909, Botafogo finished in second place in the Campeonato Carioca on two consecutive occasions, losing both to Fluminense. However, as mentioned in the club's anthem, in 1910 Botafogo resurfaced and won the state title, a feat that gave rise to the nickname that endures to this day. In the battle for the second title, the team was relentless, scoring an impressive 66 goals in just 10 matches. Additionally, Botafogo defeated the São Paulo champion of the time, AA Palmeiras, winning the Interstate Cup.
This near-perfect performance in both championships led Botafogo to be nicknamed “Glorious,” in honor of the extraordinary achievements of its short history. To this day, fans continue to use this nickname to celebrate the club's trophies and glories.
